Theme

Anyways...

     The physical symbol from the 1973 film, The Glass Menagerie--based on the story written by Tennessee Williams--that I have chosen is the "Paradise Dance Hall". Personally it symbolizes the outside world in which none of the three main characters--Amanda, Tom, and Laura-- are in a way permitted to enter. They are all invisibly tethered to an enormous amount of responsibility, because of the deliberate disappearance of the father, they seem not to be entitled to a life outside the house, one of their own personal enjoyment.

In the Glass Menagerie there are many forms of symbolism in this piece of Literature, but the one that stuck out the most to me was the unicorn. Jim had made a point that unicorns were extinct, and were different from all the other horses. The unicorn symbolizes  Laura because she is different from all others girls. Laura was not exposed to the way of the world unlike others. She kept herself inside replacing her loneliness with her glass Menagerie and her old record playing music.

Dylan's blog

The characteristics of Laura, being shy and emotionally crippled puts Amanda in a situation that makes her feel like she needs to get involved in that certain part of Laura's life. tom being a father figure of the house, has a lot of weight on his shoulders with paying the bills and putting up with his mother. He wants to go and leave his family but is a true family and cannot leave Laura and Amanda on the streets. The conflict between Amanda and Tom makes the Wingfield household uncomfortable for Laura and I feel like that's why she is the way she is. And Amanda is the way she is because she cares about both of her kids just has her own way of showing it.

Amanda is annoying and an overly controlling mother. It seems to me Laura's "issue" affects her more than Laura. Laura is independent in her own way and feels like she doesn't need a man or she would have one.  I don't think her limp is something to be so torn up about. Bad stuff happens to everyone and I don't think its as bad as its made up to be. Laura wants to go to town and if shes confident enough to face people in public she doesn't need someone to tell her how to live her life like her mother.

      I find the relationship between Laura and Tommy odd. Tommy kinda plays the "father" role. He supports the family and puts food on the table. I remember when I was little I wanted to marry my dad. Laura has been sheltered and treated like a child so maybe the relationship is similar to a younger me and my father. Although, it may not have been quite as creepy, I can  kinda understand where Laura is coming from.
